Addover is a simple online tool that allows you to add annotations (graphic and text) to a website - that is, to anything that is accessible via a URL and will be displayed by the browser. It can be used to draw someone's attention to a particular area of a website (how many times have you sent someone a link and had to write something like "Go here, scroll down and click the third link on the left"?), to express your opinion about the design or content of a website, or simply as a tool of artistic expression if you feel like drawing using a website as your canvas.
Addover does not store the original website content in its database. Rather, the content is loaded from the provided URL every time the addover is displayed. Thus, the website content could change between the time the addover was created and the time it was viewed. Also, if a website uses cookies, the website content displayed on two computers with different cookies for that site could be different (e.g., a user who is logged into the website would see one content, but the user who is not logged in will see another content).
How to create an addover
To create an addover, you 1. Enter the url of the website into the textfield on the upper right, 2. Use the green Canvas Position arrows to change which portion of the website is visible in the frame, 3. Add your annotation content using the Tools (Spray Paint and Sticky Notes) in the lower right and 4. Save the annotated website and receive the corresponding addover URL.
Known Problems
If you have ideas on how to fix any of these problems or if you want to report other problems, please write to us at .
Addover will not work with some websites. In particular, those websites that contain javascript code to prevent them from being displayed inside a frame will not work.
Since different browsers render HTML content slightly differently, if addover content is created in one browser but viewed in another browser, the alignment of the addover content with respect to the layout of the original page might change.
Internet Explorer will render Drop-Down Menus (also known as Combo Boxes or Select Menus) on top of any of the content in the browser. Apparently, this is a feature of the Internet Explorer.
There is a known flash/browser bug which prevents non-english characters from being typed correctly into the Addover Sticky Notes in certain browsers. If you find that you are affected by this bug, you can still enter non-english content into the Sticky Notes by typing it somewhere else, and Copy/Pasting it into the Sticky Note.
Some websites automatically place focus on a textfield. This creates a strange bug in Internet Explorer where you are not able to type anything into the Canvas URL field or a Sticky Note, because all the keyboard entry goes to the textfield in the website. If you find that you are affected by this bug, you can still enter text into Canvas URL or a Sticky Notes by typing it somewhere else, and then Copy/Pasting it (Right-Click/Paste) into the Canvas URL or Sticky Note.
